Sarah Sumner

Sarah Sumner, Ph.D., MBA is the first woman theologian in U.S. history to become dean of a conservative evangelical seminary. In her first sixteen months on the job as dean of A.W. Tozer Theological Seminary, she assembled and led a team that broke three all-time records in 34 years.


Prior to her deanship, Dr. Sumner was a faculty member and department chair at Azusa Pacific University (1997-2009).  Before that, she taught theology at Wheaton College and served on church staff as a ministry leader in the evangelism department at Willow Creek (1994-1995).  In 1996, she married Jim Sumner.

As President of Right On Mission, Sarah Sumner seeks to redefine Christian higher education.  She founded Right On Mission in 2015.

Dr. Sumner holds a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology and M.Div. Equivalent from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, an MBA from Azusa Pacific University,, an M.A. in Theology from Wheaton College, and a B.A. from Baylor University.  She was trained as a Global Change Agent in the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. 

Sarah Sumner has written four books including Men and Women in the Church:  Building Consensus on Christian Leadership (IVP, 2003; now in its 12th printing), Leadership Above the Line (Tyndale, 2006), Just How Married Do You Want To Be? (IVP, 2008) and Angry Like Jesus:  Using His Example To Spark Your Moral Courage (Fortress, 2015).
