What is self-respect? What distinguishes self-respect from therapeutic notions of self-esteem and independent worth? How does self-respect differ from self-awareness and self-acceptance? Many in the church are taught to “deny yourself” without noticing this command presumes a self that is capable of loving others “as yourself.” How can a true Christ-follower “do nothing from selfishness” while still possessing a self? What does it mean to be a selfy? What stories have we lived that reveal our human need for biblical formation of the self?
Headship in the Church | Dates = Tuesday, February 3, 10, 17, 24 | Time = 2:30 - 4:10 pm PST
What is headship? What does the English word head mean in Scripture? According to the apostle Paul in I Corinthians 11:3, God is Head, the husband is head, and Christ is “The Head.” The husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church (Ephesians 5:23). How is the husband’s headship like the headship of Christ? How does headship touch the angelic realm? Why the apostle Paul say that women are to keep their heads covered “because of the angels”?

Because theology is no longer regarded as “the queen of the sciences,” most educated people seem never to have constructed a framework for understanding the cosmos as a majestic system that demonstrates the artistry of God. Presupposing God as Creator frees us to define “theology” not narrowly as the direct study of God, but more broadly as the study of everything God has revealed. By what kind of approach can we reliably and responsibly apprehend the structure of reality from a theological perspective? In other words, what methodology is necessary for this sacred inquiry?
